What's included

  • The surgeon's fee and the hospital or clinic fee
  • The anaesthetist, or the local anaesthetic
  • Your compression vest and dressings
  • Wound checks and follow-up visits, and often a lab test of the removed tissue

What pushes it up or down

  • Up: a general anaesthetic in hospital, a night's stay, skin removal, a revision of earlier surgery
  • Down: a smaller case under local anaesthetic in a clinic theatre
  • Not a factor: the county. Prices outside Dublin sit in the same range

Prices in euro for the full procedure. This is our guide, not a quote: the surgeon sets your price after examining you, in writing.

Why one quote is higher than another

The biggest difference is the anaesthetic and where the operation happens. A smaller case done under local anaesthetic, in a clinic theatre, sits at €3,000 to €3,300. Under a general anaesthetic in a private hospital, with an anaesthetist and sometimes a night's stay, it is €6,500 to €6,900. Removing loose skin and moving the nipple adds theatre time and longer scars, from about €6,500.

How much gland there is matters more than how big the chest looks. A soft, fatty chest can be mostly liposuction; a firm disc of gland has to be cut out. The county you live in makes little difference: prices around the country sit in the same range as Dublin.

What a fair quote includes

  • The surgeon's fee, the hospital or clinic fee and the anaesthetist
  • Your compression vest, dressings and medicines to take home
  • Testing the removed tissue in a lab, which some surgeons do routinely
  • Your wound checks and follow-up visits
  • What happens, and who pays, if you need a revision

Ask for it in writing before you pay a deposit. A first consultation with a surgeon usually costs €195 to €300, and some take it off the price if you go ahead.

Insurance, tax and paying

Health insurance plans normally exclude cosmetic surgery, and male breast reduction for appearance is treated as cosmetic. A few cases with pain and a large chest may be considered, only with approval before the operation. Ask your insurer in writing before anything is booked. Read HSE and insurance cover.

Revenue gives no tax relief on cosmetic surgery. Relief may be possible where surgery corrects a health issue, at the standard rate of 20%.

Some clinics offer payment plans through a finance company. Read the interest rate and the total you'll repay, and never sign on the day of your consultation.

Abroad

Packages in Turkey are advertised at €2,000 to €5,200, before flights, hotel nights and time off. Read Ireland or abroad before you decide.
