Before surgery
Surgery is the last step, not the first
See a GP first. Gynaecomastia often has a cause that can be treated, such as a medicine, anabolic steroids or a hormone problem, and treating it can shrink the chest without an operation. One side only, a hard lump, pain or anything leaking from a nipple always needs a GP's check.
The condition itself, its causes, what happens in the teenage years and the options without an operation, is covered by our sister guide gynaecomastia.ie. This site is about the operation: what it costs, who does it and how the recovery goes.
- A GP has checked the cause, and nothing needs treating
- It has been there a year or more and hasn't settled
- Your weight is steady
- You're 18 or over, and off anabolic steroids
- Then a surgeon can say which operation fits

| Procedure | Typical cost in Ireland | What moves the price |

| Gland removal with liposuction, general anaesthetic | €6,500 to €6,900 | A private hospital and an anaesthetist, sometimes a night's stay |
| With skin removal (a large or loose chest) | From about €6,500 | Longer theatre time and scars; the nipple may be moved and made smaller |
| Consultation with the surgeon | €195 to €300 | Sometimes taken off the price if you go ahead |
What's included
- The surgeon's fee and the hospital or clinic fee

What pushes it up or down

The surgery and guides
Every question, answered straight
Each guide gives the honest risks, who it isn't for, the recovery and what results are realistic.

Liposuction or gland excision
Fat comes out by liposuction; the firm disc behind the nipple has to be cut out. Which you need, the grades and the day itself.

Recovery, week by week
Home the same day, the vest, one to two weeks off work, and when you can train your chest again.

Questions
Questions men ask
How much is gynecomastia surgery in Ireland?
Our price guide puts gynaecomastia surgery at €3,000 to €6,900 in Ireland. Smaller cases under local anaesthetic sit at the lower end, €3,000 to €3,300; gland removal with liposuction under a general anaesthetic in hospital is €6,500 to €6,900; and surgery that also removes skin starts from about €6,500.
Is gynecomastia the same as gynaecomastia?
Yes. Gynecomastia is the American spelling, gynaecomastia the Irish and British one. Both mean enlarged breast tissue in men, and male breast reduction is the operation that treats it.
Does liposuction alone fix gynecomastia?
Only when the fullness is mostly fat. True gynaecomastia is a firm disc of gland behind the nipple, and liposuction can't remove it, so most men need the gland cut out as well.
How long is recovery?
Most men are home the same day, back at a desk job in about one to two weeks, in a compression vest for three to six weeks, and back to chest training after four to six weeks.
Is it covered by the HSE or my health insurance?
Rarely. Public operations are few, and insurers normally treat it as cosmetic unless strict criteria are met and approved in advance.
Will it come back?
The result is usually permanent, because removed gland doesn't grow back. The chest can fill out again if you gain a lot of weight, or if the cause returns: anabolic steroids, some medicines, or a hormone problem.
Who will contact me?
One clinic, not five. We pass your enquiry to one Irish clinic, and they contact you to arrange a consultation with a surgeon. Nothing is booked until you say yes.
